Personally, I must agree that there was a certain amount of character development, but I feel like there really wasn’t a peak/turning point to Kyoya’s character that provided to be realistic or true to time in a sense. What I mean by this is that it felt rather rushed, and there wasn’t enough emotional turmoil between the main characters to allow for the amount of character development seen in the manga. Anyways, I just wanted to share what I thought, but kudos to you for writing some pretty good paragraphs :)
Like, this might have been one the best yaoi I have read, so I cannot believe the fucking score for this compared to how many people have voted. The characters are stereotypical to a certain degree, but there is significant character development in this five chapter manga. Sure, at first I was going to just stop reading because of the way it started. I hate rape in yaoi so I try to avoid it, but I kept growing because I've read other blackmail sorts of manga and some of them have turned out fantastic. Of course I don't condone blackmail of any kind, but let's remember this is fiction. I am usually fine with blackmail, if 1) it isn't the focus of the story, and 2) if the person, whether the uke or seme, seems treats their partner well in the end, despite how it may start out. I am a suck for stories like this because it involves the element of unexpected feelings. I love it when the characters are caught off guard by the fact that they are falling in love with each other. Like, I thought that Kyoya was going to be a dick for the whole book and then completely switch personas to seem like he was genuinely sorry for his actions just to give it a happy ending, you know? But, this manga does very well with setting up each of the characters and we learn little details about both of their personalities as the manga goes on.
There will be spoilers beyond this point
I really thought that Yuzuru was going to be this helpless uke that just tolerates anything, and it my come off that way, but it is only because he is vulnerable and not accustomed to relationships with others. So, in the context of the story, it makes sense. Yes, maybe the beginning starts of a little fan servicey and cliche, but honestly after the first chapter, the story really starts. The pacing is really done well and the development of not only explored, so is Kyoya.
First, Yuzuru, who doesn't know how to meet people or socialize very well, learns to over time after he meets Kyoya, and begins socialize more and more without noticing it. When he spoke to Mai and she gave him that advice, Yuzuru saw where he may have closed off from people. As his relationship with Kyoya deepens, he starts to differentiate the meaning of friendship and what falling in love is. His personality is also fully shown to us as he becomes more confident and takes the initiative by the end. He is not the same as he started out. Kyoya, as well, starts off as a huge dick wad, but slowly we see little bouts of kindness from him that reveal who is character is, not only to Yuzuru but also to us, as the audience. From bad pasts experiences, Kyoya has chosen to assimilate, ultimately sacrificing a part of his identity so he wouldn't get hurt again. He didn't care to be popular, and that is shown. At first, it seems like he is a playboy and all, but once he starts hanging out with Yuzuru, we see how disinterested his is in the big crowd that he so desperately tried to fit in with since he was younger. It makes sense that over the years, he became bitter and hated himself for not staying true to himself. Because he'd rather be with Yuzuru, we see how he allows himself to connect with someone. All is revealed that he actually is very much like Yuzuru, desperate for a friend and a deeper connection, but his trust issues keep him from letting others in, which is also seen when Mai says that he closes himself off from others. He was just scared of being hurt again. And what makes this manga so good is that Kyoya actually apologizes for his actions, and even owns up to what he did wrong. He explained himself but din't make excuses. I love that because we really don't see that a lot in manga that are executed in this way. I thought this was so cute and lovely. The romance is depicted realistically over time. even though they start off as sex friends, it does take them awhile for their feelings to develop. That's what I really like about this manga. Both characters grow and learn from each other. I have also had experiences similar to both of them, being isolated, and isolation myself because I don't want to put myself through the hurt of getting myself involved in a friendship where I might get hurt. So, I think that they way both of them seek companionship, though executed very differently, really does a great job showing how they overcome their hurdles and finally be together.
I do have to say one thing though. I really hate how people will rad a manga and then after the first chapter, score it low for some petty reason. Like people will give a story a bad score if the translation isn't perfect. Like stop being so full of yourself. You rate a story based on the story not bullshit that has thing to do with the writing or the art. And, speaking of that, people will rate a story lower just because the art isn't to their liking. Stop doing that! When you rate it low over stupid things, it makes people think the story is bad and turn away. I really hate when stupid people do that. Read the story and judge it based on how it is presented and written, not because you didn't like how it started out. Because those people that rated it low probably stopped after the first chapter, which is a shame because they missed out on a really good manga, that is cliche to an extent, but the execution is done in a cleaver way that genuinely took me by surprise, and by now, reading so much yaoi, only very few really do that. I wish this would get a higher score instead of people once again just being stupid. Okay, done with my mini rant. If you made it to the end of this, please read this manga. I thank the mangaka who put her time to make this terrific story as well as the beautiful art.
