I think it's because the type of person the mc. His reason before was because he and the stalker was a man and he didn't think the stalker was 'that bad'. This was pure fear. He is the type of person to only look for help when he is absolutely sure it will work, but he also doesn't want to be judged he acts strong in front of people and doesn't ask for help. Having a submissive and explosive personality, the police especially in his case (since they both dudes) most likey wouldn't have helped him or not even believed him, which is like the rejecting his heart. In short the mc is not a stable person, but he isn't at fault as well. He was completely and utterly alone for a long time,and danger will not be able to bring him out of his deeply rooted personality, but it can make it worse.
