you are right about the closet gay there are a lot of hints here and the raws prove it too. He is ashamed to be gay and won't admit it cause his mom is homophobic. He even tells the therapist in one chapter that he just isn't gay.
Lauren is closeted I think. He feels guilty for having a relationship behind his parents' back. So when ever Chip shows affection to him, it's like a reminder that he's stabbing his family in the back.
Just a theory, or Lauren is ace but he's slept with many people before so I don't know oop
