Not sure if I’m answering the question the way you intended it, but here goes: It helps if you start by reading the series in order: ‘The Breaker’ tells the story of how the boy meets, and is consequently separated from, his teacher. ‘New Waves’ explores the boy’s own growth both thanks to and in spite of his teacher’s absence.
