ryan never wanted the throne it was just forced upon him bc the older brother was sickly and ryan excelled at everything he did, when he was a child he couldnt have him but then he found El again when he got older and caught him, he only desired that kid never the throne

Since I binge read this at night, maybe I just really missed that part, but what triggered Ryan's change of heart? What made him lose interest in the throne? That near death experience? I kinda feel like that was too sudden - but again. Maybe I missed the key point ^^
