Not spoilers, just conjecture. Whilst I don't hate the pairing of the story (and obviously people all like different things) I think this story is doing exactly what the infamous Unripened Expression did to ruin itself for SO many people.
The crush is an outsider to the narrative but the crushes friend is serving as a secondary role to the main character. This is typically how couples are written, with both sides being developed so getting together feels natural and well paced. Instead the crush is going to fell abrupt and forced after playing second fiddle to the friend but justified just because we're told the MC likes him.
