I'm not sure about the Japanese but many cultures put their wedding rings on their right hand.
In America wedding ring is left hand :]
I know... I'm Canadian. But I went to Ireland and had a ring on my right hand and people asked if I was engaged. And I do know other European countries that use the right hand over the left.
