different society, you know... there are still places even in America that think gay is a "sickness" and can be "cured". It's reality. How can a hyung NOT worry about his only living sibling? they also lost their parents, keep that in mind. And they live in South Korea where gays are not as accepted.

no, i get the part that he's worried about his brother because society fucking sucks, and queer ppl still aren't accepted even tho it's fucking 2019 - like i get that. But he himself is gay, so like what kind of thought process makes him think he influenced his brother into becoming gay? That's not how it works. Sexuality doesn't work like that, and his brother is in a loving relationship, talking like that to him, minimizing his feelings is a dick move. I like his older brother, but his reaction and the way he talked to him pissed me off.

you're right, i'm an alien. i don't get human emotions. or maybe being gay doesn't work through influence ¯_(ツ)_/¯
and his older brother being gay, and having to deal with shit, maybe should understand his younger brother and support him instead of minimizing his feelings.
I'm sorry if my opinion bothers you, or any of you, feel free to downvote that's fine. But I'm not gonna say you're right and i'm wrong. Gayness isn't contagious, and his brother's reaction might have been human to you, but it was fucking awful to me.

The thing is, some people may not live in societies as privileged as you. Maybe your society is more progressive and you live in a space that is safer than for other LGBT people (I say this loosely because I can think of no country that provides that safe of a space for LGBT people), but please put yourself in Yohan’s brother’s shoes. Have you ever had to ask yourself the question, “would I prefer my son to be gay or straight?”. If you answer that it doesn’t matter, then either you are confident of the society you live in or you’re naive of the state of the world in other parts.

In South Korea, it’s not easy to be gay. Just like in many other Asian societies, South Koreans define themselves by their relationships. Family is much more important than in the West—parents are blamed for their children’s wrongdoings and anything that goes wrong with the child is the parents’ fault. If you steal, if you lie, the parents feel guilty that they didn’t raise you well. Similarly, if you’re born blind, if you’re born intellectually disabled, the parents blame themselves because they gave birth to you like that. It’s not logical sometimes, but it shows that in Asian societies, the child’s welfare is always seen as the parents’ biggest responsibility and duty. The child should come first.

E.g. Asian parents are more likely to stay together despite being in an unhappy marriage for their children because they don’t just think about themselves, they think about the welfare of those around them.

Yohan’s parents weren’t active in his upbringing, so the brother pretty much sees himself as Yohan’s father. Seeing that Yohan is gay, the brother is clearly worried because he knows it’s not easy for Yohan and won’t be for a long time. Gay people are discriminated against and have to hide their love lives. Thinking about it, he’s distraught that his little brother has to go through hardship, so he pins the blame all on himself even though it’s illogical. Because that’s how Asian societies mainly work. It’s just like how he blames himself for Yohan’s bad grades as he can’t physically be there for Yohan, while others would say that it’s plainly Yohan’s fault for not bothering to study.

yours is the first comment i can somewhat agree with.
and you are right i am privileged, where i live it's not as bad as in other places, but prejudice sadly exists everywhere. but fair enough, in asia it's more complicated. and the brother blames himself for however yohan turns out, because he's his father figure, and maybe that's understandable because thats how their society is...but does that make it right or ok? for him to act like that towards yohan?
he's worried, that's fair, but how he spoke to yohan isn't ok. even if it's an emotional response to how their society is, even if it makes sense and it's understandable, it doesn't make it fine. that's basically what i said. y'all are jumping into the older brother's defense, while i'm just looking from yohan's side. he's a kid, with a lot of issues, and basically being told you aren't gay, 'cause i say so...sorry i don't like it. and this is a story, we all see things differently and that's ok, it's not like i'm trying to force y'all to see things from my perspective, so you don't need to try and force me to see from yours.

"would I prefer my son to be gay or straight? If you answer that it doesn’t matter, then either you are confident of the society you live in or you’re naive of the state of the world in other parts.” really?? ppl are gay, your child might be gay, and if you're not ready for that to happen you shouldn't have kids. that's it. simple. maybe i'm just a privileged dickhead, idk, but that's how i see things.
