I feel like you're getting the wrong idea why the seme thought of him as a girl. That's not heteronormative at all. I think it's very sweet that he did. The author went as far to explain how the main character felt trapped to be in a man's body when he thought of himself as a girl. The seme knew all that in chapter 1 and is respecting the gender identity the uke had when he said 'he's always been a girl'. Sorry, I might have gotten carried away with this. It's just frustrating when people disregard trans people, so I was really happy to see a manga that addresses the discredit most trans people get.
I'm not trying to disregard trans people and I'm all for stories that have trans characters. Like 'pretty wimps' handles a gay character who like feminine things well. For me, this story (albeit cute) just emphasized too much on what's considered 'normal' and what's not, even if it tries to show that the seme is accepting of the uke. That's why I read it as heteronormative, through the plotline of marriage counseling and the uke momentarily wanting to break up bc the other party might want a wife/kids. I'm sorry if I offended u, after a while I'm just like let gay characters be gay and not worry about if they're like ruining their partner's future. I hope this makes sense
I think you raise an interesting point, though I do believe the mc identifies as a girl. (The following might get off-topic, but is a concern of mine that rises from your point:)
There’s these weird notion in my country that all gay men secretly want to be women, because apparently that’s the only reason they could want to have sex with other men; so any man who acts slightly feminine is assumed gay and there are rude “jokes” and mockery associated with all that. But that just feels (to me) as very unfair to gay men, who are still men in their own right and individuality, as well as to trans people, who have to deal with even more bullshit like that just for trying to be who they are. However I feel like I cannot argue any of these points with close people to me who have such notions because at the end of the day I don’t know enough/am not involved enough (?). What do you think about this?
I get what you're saying. Where I live people think the same way. But truth is, there isn't ONE DEFINITION or case. Some gay men do feel like a woman, some simply like feminine things, some don't. Some men like cute things and aren't even gay. I think there shouldn't be labels at all! But that is just me. As for this particular uke, he is a gay man who likes to be a princess, ever since he was born. I think that's what they call trans. Cheers
No, I say this with all respect, but we cannot trans every character. When you read the mangas with crossdressing or trans characters is notorious, they are saying that they want to be girls. In this case he just loves cute things, is not the same. It's really sexist to think you want to be a women just because you like cute things, and that is what the author is doing, but in reality I should not be surprised: Japan is a very sexist country, lol. He just want to feel like a princess (that means to feel spoiled and protected), not being a woman. For me this is just a sexist stereotyped manga, which is really sad. Don't make justice for gay men nor for trans people.
Yeah, I feel like the notion you mention is shown in a good number of yaoi/shounen ai stories. Like how many times has the seme fallen for an uke that’s slender and almost resembles a girl, implying they must be the uke. And idk, to me it’s obvious when authors are cishet women from the way they assume that gay men want to be women (I’m not referring to this comic in particular), or that one partner is usually more feminine passing. I could go on bc I have plenty of gay friends and am bi myself but it’s like, sometimes I just wanna see stories of gay men dating other gay men, not the typical pairing of a gay man and straight guy where the main conflict is ‘oh he used to like women and might want marriage.’ Plus it'd be nice if authors understood that a gay man being attracted to men doesn’t automatically mean he is repulsed by women or that he’s a playboy who frequents gay bars.
It's cute but yaoi never stops surprisig me in how sexist it can be xD Why the seme thinks of him as a girl just because he likes cute things? It's 2019 man.
