Yaoi and being aware consumers!! <3 <3

Hi! I'm quite curious! I'd love to hear your responses!! I really want to gauge the dynamic of those in this yaoi community and I want to raise a conversation about being aware consumers :) can't wait to read your responses!! (posted an "experience/question" format of this. didnt realize the difference between this and that. maybe you can head on over to the other post to make your comments [: )

How old are you? When did you start reading yaoi content?

What does yaoi mean to you?

and do you believe this content can be harmful to others (people, gay community, women, lgbt, etc.)? Why and how?

Lastly, what do you think it means to be an aware consumer of yaoi content?

I feel like I’m gonna get bashed for putting this out but I like polls so everyone just leave me be, just putting my opinion and age out ONLY for the purpose of knowledge/polls. I’m gonna regret this
    16

I started reading yaoi in 7th grade (13-14) due to the influence of upperclassmen (my school was a high school and middle school) I was so innocent once upon a time

Yaoi is stress relief, good short stories(usually) depends on the level but equivalent to 50 shades of gray.

Some people are shit at keeping fiction and reality separate and can harm lgbt people. I don’t think yaoi is truly harmful, mostly just the people. A sword is not bad but the person who holds it chooses its path.

It’s an addiction and everyone here(most likely) has fallen in the pit and knows.

    Ugggggg I regret already

    2) A form of entertainment, enjoyable read.

    3) Nah, I don't think so, it's all fiction

    4) i have no idea, all I know is that whatever I read in yaoi stays in yaoi, I don't really take it to deep lgbt reality level, I just read it for fun.

Hi I'm 13 years old right now, and I'm turning 14 at August.

I started reading Yaoi when I was probably 9 or 10 but that was when I didn't know what Yaoi was.

Yaoi just means a boy X boy manga/manhwa/manhuas to me.

The Yaoi content can be harmful to the community if people see kinkiest Yaoi contents first, which they might assume all the people in the community are like that.

Then idk what the last part means ヾ(☆▽☆)

I appreciate it so much! similarly I started around the same age you did. and i totally agree with you, there are people who cant separate the two which leads to harmful misconduct. Hi!! omg, you're my age when I started reading yaoi content! The nastalgia! Anyway, thank you for sharing!!!

I'm very pleased to see how socially aware you are at your age, I definitely wasnt. So I'm glad :) you have a good head on your shoulders. also, the last part kind of asks what you think it means : being aware/understand of what you read and support when you read yaoi mangas.

Hi! I really think that questions like this are important, not everything is about entertaintment, so I really appreciate polls like this.
    1. 25+ and I started 2 years ago reading it, but my 1st time was when I was 15 y.o. and I did not liked it at that time
    2. Dissociation, entertaintment, de-stress
    3. Can be harmful to too young or very unexperienced people who assume that all scenarios and characters are like that and try to imitate their behaviors
    4. I try to read all the manhwas and comics that are available in their original sites to profit the original author (like webtoons), unfortunately is the only way I can help for now

Just wanna start off by saying that this is all my opinion so please don’t butcher me, thanks I would really appreciate it!~~

    - Well I started reading yaoi when I was 11 so also at a pretty young age. I started by reading black butler fics on wattpad.

    - To me yaoi is definitely a kind of outlet. I have always loved books and movies and any other kind of story telling device. For some reason this was just the genre that resonated with me the most. Obviously I have some that I despise and some that I adore but I’m just a really picky person and this is the easiest place I can find content I genuinely love.

    - I acknowledged the fact that in some cases people have definitely caused problems for members of the lgbt+ community in the name of the BL/GL. Though I also feel like people are blaming the genera itself when the real people at fault are the ones being rude and harmful to others. The same way an artist can’t control their fans actions, a genre can’t be blamed for the actions of its viewers. Just because you like a character that killed someone doesn’t mean that you support murder. Just because you’ve read and liked a manga with a character getting raped doesn’t mean that you support rape.

    - I don’t really feel any different than someone who’s a really big fan of superhero movies, rom coms, or really any other genre. At the end of the day it’s all just fiction.

Ehhh I feel nervous but whatever at this point what could be worse.

I was probably around 13 when I started reading bxb novels on wattpad, then a few years later started reading yaoi.

Yaoi for me is boy x boy. I’ve never really liked how females are portrayed in romance, of course with a few Exceptions, so that is how I got into bxb.

Of course yaoi means bxb with sex scenes, like shounen ai is bxb without sex scenes.

Harmful is a very vague word. I think to much of anything can be harmful, I think it can be addicting to read, but it is a much better hobby to have than others. If you are suggesting it is harmful to the gay community then I don’t agree with that. It is a fantasy world, not reality, just like any subject there will be controversies on whether something is politicly or morally correct, but then why are horror movies so popular? We litterally watch people get murdered with unusally only one survivor, however we don’t go out killing people after we watch a film, it is the same concept for anything we read.

Honestly for the last question I don’t know. Being in the manga/webtoon industry is hard, this is something most people wanting to get into it is aware of. To me I think sites like this one are both good and bad. They are good because you find titles you would’ve never known, majority of them are translated by people because majority of us can’t speak the native language, and it’s kind of like a library.

It is bad because some people don’t support authors but honestly as a consumer I rather read something and then decide whether or not I deem it worthy enough to buy.

If you think about it a lot of online websites don’t give you an option to revoke your purchase, so it makes it hard on the customer to want to buy something, and honestly there are a lot of plots where the beggining is very well written but the author losses interest and just gives the story a quick ending. If I bought that in an actual store, I would return it because I don’t want it sitting on my shelf.

We aren’t oblugated to give money to every manga/webtoon creator just because they put a lot of work into it. If that was the case then we wouldn’t have libraries filled with free manga and books.

And I can say there are a lot more manga out there that I’m glad to say I didn’t buy than did buy. I would also like to point out that if it really bothered them that it would be taken down from this sight like other works have before.

We might be reading it for free here but if we are interedted enough they know we will want to be up to date and go out of our way to get as many chapters as we can.

    1) I'm 21 (don't remember when I start)

    2) Yaoi is just an entertainment to me. I also read every other genre and yaoi is one them.

    3) I guess it can be harmful, but like other genre (shoujo, for instance), everything is fiction and doesn't portray real relationships in real life. When you read a hentai manga, do you think it damage straight relationships? Maybe yeah to some extent, but do you actually believe scenarios like that actually happen in real life? Manga have always have kinky/ inappropriate things in it, and yaoi is not gonna be different.

    4) An aware consumer of yaoi content is someone who has common sense and doesn't come up to a gay person and ask them if they f*** like in the manga. Know the difference between fiction and reality.
