That's where several factors come into play (e.g. charisma, speech, manners)
Having more power naturally sends more enemies and other troublesome things into one's path. However, not having any power is the equivalent of not having any freedom to choose how one is going to live one's life. One can only influence things by having power.
Your definition of 'power' is too vague, mate. Of course those who have "power" in general are free to choose how they live their lives.
The power I was referring to was political power, the type of power nobles seem to have in a fantasy setting like this. Commoners have freedom and they don't have the 'power' I was referring to. They can get the job that they want (like our mc who's now working at a bakery), they can marry who they want (no need for arranged marriages to strengthen your family ties), they don't have to worry about political mind games, ettiquette, the nobility's judging eyes whenever there's a fancy ass ball.
Now, obviously, this ridiculously cliche noble vs commoner bullshit is probably exaggerated in a narrative setting but the point is: commoners have more 'freedom', at least, in this story. That's why our mc is happy to step down from her title.
To be honest I wouldn't want to be a noble either. I mean it's luxurious but I feel like her life right now is more relaxing and fun than fighting verbally, strict posture and gestures etc etc (〜 ̄△ ̄)〜
