Well I figured it's time to enlighten my peers.

For tragic stories I often find emotional (heroic) music of some sort. Primecronus used to be my go-to heroic emotional tragic battle dark (insert adjective here) music, but I find others like it as well. They have the perfect highs and lows and dramatic feel so if you time your reading properly, the climax scenes have the perfect background sound.

Oh, and for cliffhangers I make my own sound effects: either rage or cry
