I think it might have something to do with his brother, more than any feelings of her.
Hmmm, but why? I mean, he legit wanna kill athy bcoz she looks like Diana but still kept his ex cheated fiance's pic......... Evn if its bcoz of the brother.. His ex fiance was the one who seduced his elder brother.
I think it's more that he didn't care (in flashbacks it shows that he never cared about her). So if it's there or not no big deal, Unlike Diana who he deeply loved that he can not take any reminders of her. And he didn't want to kill Athy because she looks like Diana but because he blames Athy for taking away the only person he has ever loved.
Aaactually, it’s more complicated than that. He did hate Athy at first.
He wanted to kill Athanasia; it showed in some monologue Claude was having with himself that was very torn between “I want to- have to kill her now,” and “No, stay a little longer.”
Athy’s likeness to her mom was a boon and a bane to her tbh.
The reason why Claude doesn’t have pictures of Diana is BECAUSE he loved her. In a dream flashback Athy has, Claude and Diana have an argument in which Claude begs Diana to choose not to have the baby that is apparently killing her (my theory is that Athy’s magic was too strong even as a baby and it killed her mom. Remember, Diana died giving birth to Athy) and to choose to stay alive and stay with him, but, obviously Diana chose to have her baby.
Now, Claude, being in love with Diana, felt betrayed that she chose this unborn baby she doesn’t even know instead of staying alive to be with him. So he started to think that he hated her as a result of the pain and sense of betrayal he felt.
And then once Athy was born? He couldn’t kill the baby right off the bat, clearly. It was Diana’s baby, the one she sacrificed her life to give birth to, so he left Athy in the Emerald Palace. Away from him. But Athy grew to look just like her mother, and he HATED her because she’s the direct cause of Diana’s death, AND she looked like Diana, whom he felt had betrayed him and he was trying desperately to forget about Diana and move on. But it was also because Athy looked so much like her that he couldn’t kill Athy. He loves and “hates” Diana, and “hates” Athy because she’s why Diana is dead.
Why DOES claude still keep penolepie(?) picture with him??????

i mean, Diana had thawed his heart but she was merely a concubine and NONE of her pic were still kept... =')
