A lot of people hate this ending but for some reason I really like it. It did get me so fucking depressed, even after rereading it 5 or 6 times, but I think it's so much better than a completely happy ending. It's obviously really sad that Kyon and Karis are gonna die and the thought of Lucaon and Sihan getting new lovers got me depressed, but I liked it more than a completely happy ending. The story generally has a melancholy feel to it, so throwing a happy and overly sappy ending would feel out of place. I'm also so tired of yaois having the same happy endings, so seeing a more sad one is a really nice change. With this ending as depressing as it is, it leaves you to kind of imagine it, and think of so many possible ways it could turn out. Wether you would imagine Kyon and Karis dying, or them somehow becoming a royal and living a long life like Lucaon and Sihan. I find that sort of ending much better than a sappy basic ass ending. It still has me crying no matter how many times I reread it, but it's still one of the best endings for yaois.
