If i could guess, i have the feeling that Mike fell for her that lead him fighting for the crown. After all Mike might be mischiveous but he still her only friend.
You are right, it can be. But I hope it is not the case because she needs a real friend and it makes things so complicated and tiring when you really love someone as a friend but he loves you as a woman/lover ╥﹏╥

I think in the end, mike will be the crown prince because prince/ron will choose elise over his title as a prince. So elise can be a doctor and they can live happily after together.
I dont remember every detail but when elise said mike died because of "that reason" it looked like to me he died because of some "royal title war" or something like that.
