Yeah, it’s definitely a Buddha reference. Due to Buddha being God in Buddhism and Buddhism is more or less the only religion in Japan.

You are close! It symbolizes the renunciation of wealth and material things. So while the wealthy wear heavy earrings, the ones that find enlightenment take those earrings off. There's a couple of other interpretations but I think that's the most commonly used. Stay warm, fellow Canadian!
