They even killed him off off-screen without any proper build up. Just a simple ''the king's going to kill him and oh now the king is transporting his dead body and that of his sisters + wife'' and that's the end of his character. Like wasn't he supposed to be important or something; wasn't his character being fleshed out with an actual goal in mind? At least give the man an ending we can follow.
Let's just hope the author would be smart enough to make a plot twist that the step-bro actually made a deal with that king and somehow managed to staged the whole scene just to mislead the MC & ML so later the step-bro would strike back at unexpected time, making him the ultimate last boss of the stories, then ultimately died spectacularly and brutally..
