    When you reply on a comment, you'll be automatically notified when there are new reply to the comment. So, you're following the conversation.

    As the others said, when people type ff or following, it's so that whenever someone else replies, they'll get a notification for it. Say someone asked a question you didn't know the answer to but really wanted to know, too. You could type ff, and when someone else answers, you'll get a notification. Basically, it just makes it easier to get back to the comment and you don't lose it.
