It's the meditation Makoto uses before he shoots an arrow. He blends with his surroundings and because of that his magic appears almost nonexistent and they think he died. In actuality, that ritual causes his mana to expand exponentially.
Thus reaffirming my theory that the illusion space is reflective of Makoto's state of being.
