To me this plot touched on Contradictions, self-esteem issues, and lacking the ability to project emotions in a healthy manner.

Having a best-friend who's great at the majority of things; To herself, who is average in everything she does. It destroys a person's self-esteem to be compared by others on a daily basis.

People's mannerisms, and use of speech treat Ms.Average like she's simply not enough, cute enough. Like she's a nice girl you bring home to your mother, but easily leave for another; I wouldn't be surprise to find her family members are more likely to mention Mr.BFF.
And she looks around her, all she sees is her BFF lavished with praise.
It would make her feel inadequate. Useless Unattractive. Invisible. 'Average'. You can't help but self-judge, wish you were anyone but yourself; Like eyes are constantly just scrutinising your every move.

And when the person who makes you feel the most insecure is also your crush? You wanna show that person your best self. To be told you're cute, worthy of love, special. You'll make more effort in your appearance. But even when you give it your all, it's still not enough. Fighting your own demons, fighting your best friend, and fighting external elements from having him slip from your grasp.

While trying to find, and mold yourself in the presence of a refined gem.
