I've also know motels to be a spend a night and done off the next day, where as you can stay comfortably in a hotel for day on end. But yeah motel are notorious for 'one night stands'.

"Motel" started as a contraction of "motor hotel", aimed at customers driving through the area. Hotels tend to be more upscale (though not always!) & oriented to customers visiting the area in a less transitory context. *whew* lolz (=・ω・=)
