The smiley dude is not human so he could be a wandering ghost trying to go back where he belongs or even the grim reaper/death itself. that's why the boy thought of him after getting beat up by his dad (symbolism for considering death) and decided to go with him to the border lands until his childhood friend stopped him from litterally going down this path. well I cried thinking of this possibility lol
