I'd guess there is universality in there. Groups -including family - have built in need for conformity. If you're not "inside" (conform like every one else) you're "outside, and the tribe will protect against "outsiders", either by trying to bend you, or by casting you out. Gossips and hierarchy are built in too
It has nothing to do with being asian ^^) (there are quite a few movies about family diners, from different country i can think of too :)
why are those family reunions/events so relatable? is it because it's an asian family? or are there other places in the world that have like asshole relatives as well?
