Here's an interesting tid bit; apparently, the legal age for (consensual, duh) sex in Japan is 13. It's one of the lowest among developed countries.

Right?! XD I was pretty shocked at first, too. But after I learnt that, some stuff started to make sense. For example, I notice in some manga how it was mentioned that a lot of people lost their virginity in middle school, or something.
And there's also the marriageable age - for girls, it's 16, and boys, it's 18 (with parental consent) and 18 for girls, 20 for boys (without parental consent). I don't know, but 16 seemed a little too young... y'know? But it made more sense after considering that the legal age for consensual sex was 13, somehow ╮(￣▽￣)╭

It's because the birth rate is really low in Japan. So they made the consent age low so then people would reproduce more. People in Japan care about working more than making a family, and having a family is not easy if you're not earning enough.

Unfortunately yes.. Japan has one of the lowest birthrates compared to the rest of the world. I do not know the exact statistics, but it's as good as being the top 3 lowest in the whole world. Japan is also one of the country with the most elderly's, meaning elderly's make up of about 70% of Japan's population, lmao. Not to mention since Japan is a very healthy country, most Japanese outlive the people in other countries. So there you go (￣∇￣")

Yes, the national age of consent has set 13 as the minimum. HOWEVER, each prefecture in Japan sets their own age of consent laws. The national age of 13 is more set as a guideline so that no prefecture goes below that. Having said that, almost all prefectures have their age of consent set at around 16-18. In fact, technically in japan you are not even an adult until you are age 20 (not 18 like other countries).
Anyway I wish people would do a little more research instead of spreading misinformation. I won’t blame you for believing this however since it’s such a widespread “fact”, and probably popularised by sick weirdos who use to justify their gross sexual fantasies. Well, that is true, and I apologise for not elaborating. Laws are a complicated deal. But down to it, it's better than child marriage and stuff, ainnit? I mean, so many supposedly developed countries are still doing that shit.
13 is ultimately the ultimate base in Japan. And this is just a work of fiction. And not to mention, age of consent doesn't mean smack when young people with raging hormones OR sick freaks are involved. Frankly, that there is consent at all should be respected.

Having said that, my point isn’t about age of consent mattering in fiction, or how people will do what they want regardless of the law. Really, I know that stuff already and I am not complaining about it bc there’s nothing I can do about it.
My point is that people spread misinformation so readily without doing any research, and it creates a false misconception about countries etc. my comment on creeps who perpetuate these rumours is not aimed at those who spread this “fact” unknowingly but people who initially spread this around to justify their fetishes.
