He was given the opportunity to leave a toxic relationship and he didn't. Sorry but a better story in general wouldn't have ending in him back in a terrible relationship.
Y'all are underestimating love. Regardless wether he could have leave the toxic relationship, love plays a big factor in choosing the wrong decisions. You say "was given the opportunity to leave and he didn't" so easily, I guess you were never TRULY in love. Isn't there a saying "Love makes you stupid?"
Anyway, terrible relationship or not. These relationship can never be gone. The only thing I hope now is that they FIX that terrible relationship, than to just run away from it, besides it's too late to run now.
