Yeap... i read some comics that are from China and a man without a shirt is covered in white (censored) and sometimes when we are going to read a page it appears the message that I must be 18 years old to read it... only to see you xan see a dorso of a man or a french kiss between the protagonists...
For the moment they don't censor gayd relationship, but while you can see a man on a woman (she being fully clothed) and the next explain they had sex (after you click that you have 18 years old) you cannot see that in gay comics... they only kiss and later they try to let you know that they maybe had sex...
tbh im over it im over the internet in general i much rather would like to pay at this point than read washed down content that wasnt supposed to be what it is now. there are so many porn sites with porn ads so there is a way to finance sexual content with ads. wish there would be something similar for comics
I guess it's a lot like the age-restriction guide used in the movie industry. It's not mandatory to follow them, but they are required to access a lot of benefits that wouldn't be available without their approval seal. You can see that in some movies the people have their limbs severed with an axe and not a single drop of blood is shown, right? That's a tone down made to get a better PG-rating, with less age restrictions to fit a larger audience. That means more kids in movie theater and more revenue.
Wait. But in China, censorship is a bit random. Anything that would hurt the national culture or whatever might be cut out. The rules are not clear. So the content producers cut it down before it reaches their audience, in order to prevent their business to be shut down.
As I can see, some authors, like DJun and Circle's author do, is to publish their material in a wide access website (like Dongman, Kuaikan) and publish the "sensitive" material separately, in some other platform (Lofter, Weibo). It's a pain in the ass, but this is the price to achieve a wider audience AND give what the hardcore fans really want.
Sadly I'm talking about great chinese artists that have to censor their own comics... and I haven't found how to get a real copy... less in english or a language that I can understand...
But we also can see how some of these artists play with the restrictions they have to show us what they want to show us...
Also they must be careful because China governement is really sensitive and anything can offend them!!!
Exactly my concerns. I wonder if they created their comics in entirety knowing everything they had to do to publish or if they published and were told things to change because of the BL content. I wish there was an international site for publishing yaoi that was for adults only. I don't want to see blacked out areas in what I am reading or to find that suddenly a story I am reading is just taken down. That might happen soon on Line Webtoon.
This is probably why a lot of the Chinese webtoons end up coming off as quite immature in terms of the plot. Where characters that are adults, live like they are still 14 year olds at school (cough Finally living with my anti-fan) and the plot ends up revolving around idiotic misunderstandings and treating any sexual content with innuendo, because they can't be explicit in showing anything. It's not the artists fault that they have to abide by such restrictions, but it does lead to usually poorly developed plots when they are so highly censored. Look at all the comments here that think a character making some daft innuendo about Lihaun and Yuyang going to suck each other off in the toilet is some big deal, rather than just childish humour because that's as much adult content as they can legally show.
I think we can see we are not getting any scenes like that depicted in this story! But on the other hand, DJun is clearly a sophisticated artist and very clever - content could be conveyed with facial expressions and other artistic means if DJun wanted the story to go that way it could probably pass the censors, if the original site is in fact ok with even suggested homoerotic content, which I am not really sure of.
Not only him... I have seen other chinese artist that are good sending the message across even with the restrictions!!!

You can read them here: https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/sweet-boy-/webtoons-discover-policy-change/viewer?title_no=98244&episode_no=76 If Here U Are is originating from a site with these kind of restrictions you can understand that those rules greatly affect stories and we as readers are not made aware of the restrictions artists must work under. This webcomic coming from China it is likely to have some strong content restrictions. I am disappointed as an adult yaoi reader but I really just want to know the truth of what these artists are told and hope somehow we hear more about what is happening in China. Today I just started reading another BL story listed here, Don't Touch Me! and this too looks like a yaoi but could have toned-down content that is not really the kind of story I was hoping to find here.
