Sometimes yeah specially if you're throwing older classics aside just cas u like more newer art. For example, Hana Yori Dango and Hanakimi and both golden shoujo manga but the art isn't the best specially since they older
For me, personally, if you find a story that has a great plot, but you are having difficulty getting into/enjoying it due to the art, don't force yourself. On the other hand, if you see a story with potential to be enjoyable but you aren't sure about the art style in the beginning, don't just pass it by completely because of that and at least try the first chapter. After all, it never hurts. :)
When I want to read a manga I always look at the drawings and I like to see if they are good animations. Do u think that stops me from getting to read mangas that have a better storyline than one with a more desirable drawing.
