How is he an ass? He didn’t go round fucking the bartender every night for the sake of please alone he actually wanted to love him til he died. Plus he was only being honest with Yone and setting him straight basically saying not to treat him so kindly because that’ll make him fall for yone and even though yone is saying to consider him he actually lacks that determination to love him which is pretty much the same as you truly loving someone but the other person isn’t properly loving you back.
