Taken Down

DreamChaser March 30, 2018 10:24 am

The Origin of Love has been completely removed from Lezhin's site, just like Reversi was. Does anyone know what happened? Love Barometer is still up. I want to believe it's just a mistake, but given Lezhin's recent track record... :(

I was really curious about this and I went to search for Sansa's twitter and found that she posted a blog post on 24 March 2018 about the halt of the story at chapter 67. What I understood with my limited korean was that there were a couple of things that led to her decision.
In April 2017, she suffered from sexual harassment by one of the lezhin authors at the rehearsal of lezhin's live event. A producer and another writer witnessed the incident and the producer had to shut the writer up from spreading the story elsewhere. Later on, Sansa tried to approach the producer to ask if any action will be taken against the harasser etc, but the producer just kept disregarding the incident and even gave Sansa's number to the harasser without her permission (apparently for him to apologise to her???). A few days later her previous work Love Barometer (which was supposed to be free in May) appeared in the coin-refill event. She inferred that they did this to pacify her by trying to promote her story. She also says that it hurt her that each time she logged onto the website she'd see the story of the harasser and it was painful to be telling a story that was supposed to comfort and give courage to her readers even though she was suffering.
On 21 March 2018, her first chapter after an 8-week hiatus was posted (chapter 67), but she only found out through her readers that there were errors inside. The editing department didn't inform her about the errors, and because of the frequent negligence, Sansa decided to write an email to them. Next day she received a call from the producer that kind of pushed the blame onto Sansa. She also mentioned that the producer said something like "I didn't know you were having it so hard, and because of the #metoo movement recently, I thought this incident would be revealed so we had discussions internally." So Sansa got angry at the company when she heard this. Then there came a reply from the editing department which was rude and unapologetic, so she announced that her story will be halted.. And apparently they were still discussing where to go from there, lezhin told Sansa that she'll be able to finish her story in the best direction possible and she hopes that the readers would be able to enjoy The Origin of Love till the end.
From the post it sounded like she was going to settle the situation and continue with the story, but now it's removed from the site, so it's looking pretty bad..

Thank you for the detailed summary! God, that's awful. Shame on Lezhin for trying to cover it up by just removing her story without warning.

I've read that she's the one who asked to take out the series and cut ties with Lezhin because she eventually got sick of them.
Maybe they're in the procedure of selling the rights to another company (hence the complete removal)

And I've found this in the "Customer support" section of Lezhin site:

Announcements: [Cancellation] 'The Origin of Love'

    Hello, this is Lezhin Comics.

Due to the creator's request, The Origin of Love will be discontinued as of March 30 (PDT).

After this date, the comic will no longer be available on our site, but previously purchased episodes will still be available for viewing in "My Library."

Please note that free episodes must also be purchased to be saved in a user's "My Library" for later viewing.

    Thank you.

Oh, I forgot to say anything to you before, but if you'd like recommendations for similar stories on Lezhin to buy with your coins so the money isn't wasted, Love Barometer by the same creator is still up. (I liked The Origin of Love better, though...)

Something About Us and My Secret Brother are good romances, too.

She can publish it somewhere else. I can't remember anymore what exactly it was but somebody from Lezhin who worked with her (the producer maybe? I always thought it was her assistant but I also have to use google translate to read her posts) did something that she considered to be a breach of contract. Which would mean that Lezhin lost the publishing rights for it and can no longer release the series.
That's most likely what happened because they removed the series.
Btw this person (producer/assistant or whatever) seems to be pretty hated. Other authors complained about them as well but I don't know what exactly they did.

It's because the author was sexually harassed by the author of Pervert Club and Lezhin gave him her phone number without her permission and when she complained they tried to cover it all up. So the offender and this amazing author both had to discontinue and remove their webtoons. Even though the offender issues a public apology the loss of this series is beyond unforgivable to me. I will dearly miss this beautiful gem of a webtoon. Wishing the author better luck with another publishing company!

That's not completely correct. Lezhin didn't try to cover it up, it was that one shitty person who worked with her who tried to cover it up and pressured her into being quiet. When the people in charge found out they issued a public apology, removed his series, offered people who bought any of his works a refund and announced some kind of program to prevent something like this in the future. She also didn't have to discontinue and remove her series, she decided to do this because she doesn't feel comfortable anymore working for Lezhin and isn't happy with their work as a publisher.

Please don't start rumors. What happened to her was bad enough, we don't have to add anything to it. If we spread those rumors instead of the truth and people find out about what really happened they won't take it seriously anymore.

It wasn't starting a rumor and I didn't say she was forced by Lezhin to take it down. Of course after that you would personally feel uncomfortable staying with them and thus remove your series and leave. If you're going to come at someone reread first rather than putting words in their mouths.

You posted "So the offender and this amazing author both had to discontinue and remove their webtoons."
"She had to" means she was given no choice from the company. If that's not what you want to say then you shouldn't write it like that.

No. That's what you yourself are assuming it means. I'd have said "The company of Lezhin forced the author to remove her work because of the scandal." HAD THAT BEEN WHAT I MEANT. You should stop trying to twist words. This whole thing is a pity and you aren't helping it.

Just stop it, I didn't twist your words. I only replied to what you wrote and you wrote that she had to discontinue her work and take it down. "Had to" means she was forced by Lezhin to it. That's what it means. You can look it up https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/have%20to
