it might not be just tomato sauce, it could have been a different kind of tomato product that could resemble it...and tbh in the spur of the moment it could be possible to mistakenly see that as blood since Mo was brooding and thinking seriously lol
Tomato juice don't really resemble blood, I'm sure this trick wouldn't work in real life.
