I think it's more to do with success at a young age or being less successful at an older age [maybe a little bit how successful young men wouldn't date an older woman who fails at adulting]. In romantic relationships, pffft, since I was 12 [many years ago now] I dated guys 7 or 9 years older and all my friends were older as well - though it was still frowned upon. Society and their rules [though I suppose they are there for good reasons].
