Im a girl and I dont read yaoi just for the hottie characters. I just fell that feel that a yaoi story it transmits more feelings than a shojo.
Some people actually read yaoi for the plot. Emphasis on "some" people, as there usually isn't much of a plot to begin with. As for me, yaoi definitely wouldn't be my first choice if I was looking for "hottie characters." And as for guys liking yaoi, I guess it's pretty much like how many girls read yuri, even though guys are generally the one's into lesbian porn (not that they're the same thing). Gender doesn't necessarily have anything to do with it. Different strokes for different folks.
I have guy-friends that read yaoi, but they are either gay or Bisexual ╮(￣▽￣)╭
I think that yaoi has a lot female-oriented fanservice, so most readers is women. Male-oriented fanservice in mangas is very annoying if you're woman, so I gues it's the same for guys.
