You are completely missing the point. Sensei is taking Rogi (and us) on this journey into the past so that Rogi can take the trust that Tatsuyuki gave him and transform his life in the present. He can't do that if he doesn't directly confront his past.
You are missing the point, which is to wonder why authors (even brilliant ones like this one, that can draw in an almost perfect way) feel compelled to describe us whatever pass to such assholes' mind in order to guarantee selling rates. There's really nothing behind a clinical interest in "understanding" someone like Rogi. He's plain disgusting. He does not even have the vague justification (let's call it so) that someone previously abused him: all he did was because he's a total bitch. No one should take interest in someone like him. This is a manga, so his final friendship with Akitora's son works, but in real life, he would just get a hole through his head because that's what he deserves. It makes me sick when people support this kind of character.
It is possible to appreciate an author's intelligence when they are capable of describing twisted characters, but here what's really required from the public is sympathy for an asshole. I don't like it at all.
