Uhh "it's not that bad anymore"?? LGBT culture in Japan is radically different from how it I should in US. There is still legal discrimination (i.e. very very hard to find housing bc landlord will openly discriminate you if they find out, especially as a couple), bullying, being ostracized in the workplace and in school, disowning from families.

It's improving over the years of course but at a very, very slow pace and progress. And only in certain areas. It is still very very not releastic to be open in high school like that.

We can only hope. Asian countries generally are extremely socially conservative.

Thailand is pretty open about LGBT though. Of course, there are still prejudice and discrimination(mostly within the family), but LGBT still able to live and do what they want and have equal rights as heterosexual despite openly claim themselves as LGBT.

Yes, Thailand is the sole exception. And they only legalized last year, right? The other countries still have a long way to go to ever catch up.

Transgenders can legally change their gender on their ID since 2012. Only marriage of the same sex is still in progress. However, LGBT couples can change their surname into their lover's by adding their name to their lover's household registration or by adoption(These are also the ways gay couples did in some Yaoi manga).
