So basically the story is about Nagisa who recently returned to his hometown because he was kinda-ish worried for this mother. He never actually wanted to go back because of something that happened in his childhood (high school years)(I'll explain it soon). So anyways he moves back and meets one of his childhood friends, and that friend is Kaito.(he only really had two childhood friends, Kaito and Minato). Of course Kaito is really happy because Nagisa finally returned after years of no contact. Okay, for this next part to make sense, you have to know about the event that happened in their childhood.

Childhood story (if i don't explain it well enough, sorry, refer to chapter 3, it tells you the whole story in more detaii): Nagisa and Kaito have been friends since elementary school. They were pretty much the same in terms of how athletic they were and grades and such. But, once middle school came around, Nagisa started to notice that Kaito was getting much better than him in basketball, grades, and he became more popular. Then Nagisa decided that he was in love with Kaito. But, soon after, his dream of becoming a novelist was shut down, and he was told that just because he was good at literature doesn't mean that he can survive off of that. He was told to be more like Kaito. Thus, Nagisa started to develop an inferiority complex (In case you don't now what that means, it means that he feels like a loser because Kaito is better than him.) especially because it seemed that Kaito didn't care about his skills and Nagisa started to think "Even though you hold everything I ever wanted, how can you just toss it away so easily."(in chapter 3). Then they graduate middle school and he is pretty sure his love for Kaito just faded away, and they stay as normal friends. Then, high school starts and they meet someone named Minato who moved there because his body is kinda weak. Becasue of this, Nagisa's inferiority complex started to disappear and to him, that made Minato seem like a god. Then he started to notice that Kaito liked Minato. Nagisa became scared that Kaito would steal Minato (his "god") away from him. and in order for him "not to lose" he confessed to Minato before Kaito could. And he runs home out of embarrassment. Then, he gets a call that Minato never came home that day. It turns out, that Minato went over to a pond that supposedly has gods living in it, and he was praying (what he was praying for is never confirmed but, Nagisa believes it happened because Minato had a wish that was probably related to what Nagisa said). He never told anyone about what happened that day. Unable to bear the guilt, he moved to Tokyo to go to university and pretty much did anything he could in order to forget what happened (mainly him resorting to sex and overworking himself). He didn't keep in contact with anyone from his hometown except his omther. Until he overworked himself to the point that he ended up in the hospital, and his mother came over to visit him, thus leading to the beginning of the story of him moving back. Okay end of backstory and back to the main story.

So, Kaito is happy, but then Nagisa had revealed that he confessed to Minato. Then he asks Kaito to have sex with him to "fill the void" in his heart. But, he doesn't ask for forgiveness. They have sex and then Nagisa thinks that's it, they are done. But, Kaito starts saying that since they had sex, they are dating now. And he forgives Nagisa because he was more sad about the fact that Nagisa left rather than what he did. Then Nagisa tells Kaito about the whole story instead of what happened the day of Minato's death. Kaito tries to relieve the burden by saying that Nagisa is dead and there's nothing you can do about it. But Nagisa still sees it as trapping Minato's soul in the lake forever. Then Kaito basically say "He's not stuck, the only one stuck is you" of course referring to Nagisa being stuck in the past. Thus, Nagisa starts to move on, and that's where the story is right now.
