Holy shit, Supernatural created the Omegaverse trope?! Wow, who woulda thunk. Lol, I enjoyed the read and how truthful it really is, yaoi is a separate reality. Thanks for sharing!
During my freshman year I wrote a paper about female writer's, focusing specifically on Murasaki. You hit the nail on the head, except The Tale of Genji could arguably be used to fight patriarchy as well. In Murasaki's time, women were seen as impure beings because of things beyond their control. Being emotional was looked down upon. Menstruating was horrid among other "feminine" characteristics.
Truly, the only reason she was able to write The Tale of Genji was because she was lucky enough to be in the right class and the language allowed for it (female writers had to use an entire different character system). So, to finally see a man, Genji, become illogical and emotional (something that was seen as "feminine") and face consequences was a big step forward. It was a step closer to reality. For once, men embraced femininity instead of insulted it.
Nice writing. I don't think any one who has read The Tale of Genji wasn't creeped out by his "urges" for young muraskai. Lol
Lovely and very truthful documentation on the truth of the yaoi genre- admittedly I am guilty of using yaoi as an escapism and so on.If only more people, especially young fujoshis knew this-for they are very misinformed by how badly homosexuality is portrayed through yaoi and have very wrong perceptions on the topic.Good job!
The Tale of Genji is considered to be a master work of court life and manners of the Hei an period. (11th cent.) Jpn. Genji is in love with his father's (the King) wife which he cannot have. The book contains a lot of court customs and background, what people did with their time.
Dear Mangago Community,
This year I took a class about sex and gender in Japanese literature and Culture. For my final paper I wrote an essay that I think you all would like. I discuss the historical use of rape which, as we all know, is seen constantly in yaoi. If you want to learn more about traditional works of Japanese literature, the Omegaverse, or the slash fiction come take a peek at my work. And if you have any comments, you disagree, you agree, anything please share. I would love to hear the thoughts of my fellow Fujoshi.
