The city boy was never able to have a real relationship with someone because he used to be bullied/people liked him for his money, but he thought country dude was different, but it turns out country dude was being paid to help city boy farm, so city boy feels betrayed, like their relationship is a lie.

Actually, the question is, did the grandfather really write the note, or did the envious friend? Why else would he have the envelope open, and be stuffing something into it?
