In a way I felt bad for kouichi too.. He should've understood sooner that things he did were wrong.. Maybe talking about things would've helped but once he started being abusive there was no turning back but I still hope for his happy ending because of the courage he took and let go of mitsuru
please read a "national treasure" titled Hadakeru Kaibutsu by ogeretsu tanaka-sama (pardon me, but i cant force myself to call her without an honorific). you will then believe in a little thing called "second chance".
it's indisputable that kouichi is a total scumbag. yet, we cant change the fact that he has a problem, he's alone slaying his personal demon inside him and it takes a huge heart for any person to accept that fact as it is since his problem is the source of other people's destruction and unhappiness.
