a guard rail is quite common for a toddler bed, it may be that he went outside to ponder their meeting before going back inside to join the girls for sleep
I think his wife is actually really sick and is in that bed.

I dont't think he's outside maybe it's just the view though a window from outside and the trees casting a shadow into the room where he's standing perhaps
I agree. That's my guess, too.
Something is off. IN the last page, at the top part. You see him outside and staring at the moon. And then at the bottom, you see him in a hospital room, looking out. If he is visiting the hospital, it's kinda impossible to leave the two kids all by themselves, even when they're sleeping so is everything just his delusion (⊙…⊙ )
It's just my opinion so.... Yeah
