Ok, I got an answer on the whole looking taller thing. Let me preface this by saying that I have last about 50-60 pounds in fat (scale has only changed by 30, but I've been putting on muscle, so yeah).

When you're heavy, the wider width, will make you look shorter as a ratio, and secondly, that weight is pulling on your spine, compressing it, maybe not by much, but it's enough.

As you lose weight, the ratio changes, making you seem taller, but things also decompress. I seemed to have grown half an inch between now having extremely high arches in my feet and my spine has gone to a more comfortable length.

With guys, I've been told that the change can be more drastic.

Forgot to mention, that when you're heavier, you're more incline to slouch since that weight is dragging you down by your shoulders and front area.

Loosing weight can give the illusion of gaining a little height, however not a lot and I can't recall if the characters ever stood side by side prior. Maybe he was a tall-fat guy, but I'd have to reread for certain.

That is a good question. But I also have an answer for that. See, I tried to get Lasik but I am unable to because I have a condition called Keratoconus that wouldn't be solved by Lasik surgery.
