Its pretty clearly implied that Kubo raped Shirase, Shirase passed out during the rape, Kubo finished and put his shorts back on before he passed out next to Shirase and then Shirase got pulled out to sea and drowned in his sleep. They were sleeping next to the shore, Shirase had been drinking and didnt wake up. I mean, you can argue that he committed suicide, but how? The cause of death was drowning, how'd he drown himself without something holding him down?
