Yeah, it's called Stockholm Syndrome. In order to protect itself, the victim's brain convinces them that the abuser is right and that the victim loves them. It does happen in real life ('~')

Exactly. The basis of the relationship is covertly transactional. The mental conditions of the victim are calculation and hypervigilance. The emotions, if they even exist under such acute focus, are anxiety and fear. The overall state bears a closer affiliation with PTSD than anything else, except that the trauma is happening in real time. It's certainly not love.

In yaoi, the implicit attraction exists prior to the conflict, but circumstances (like a marital engagement to the boss' daughter) prevent the relationship from proceeding naturally, so the characters are driven to irrational extremes until love resolves all of it. It couldn't be further from reality ... unless they incorporated bug-eyed aliens dropping down on their heads to feast on human flesh ... So I guess it could be further from reality.
