I don't think what Urie and co did was dumb, rather it was weak. Lacking conviction thus they failed. I read it from here:

Thus, Furuta acted openly because he was sort of pissed or mocking their action, like saying that they are weak and what he wants is a more powerful attack from them. Furuta is the protagonist and like us readers, he's getting impatient of Kaneki and other CCG people, Urie and co. apparently, to make their move a against him. A move that would be strong enough to take him down and make him the super villain.
Holy shit, you're right. When I place myself in Furuta's shoes, as a bored, morbid person looking for fun, I could definetly see myself doing the same given these opportunities. Being the worst villan you can think of and being struck down only by someone with complete conviction would be the way to go. No half-asses, that's definetly boring. But thankfully I'm not that type of person, and am saddened by current situation. I really hope there's a happy ending, or maybe a continuance in a third series. How awesome would that be? ヾ(☆▽☆)
I've never cursed so much in a chapter before. Death flags everywhere .Grrrr mutsuki just get the fuck out already, you and aura. Yomoooo nooo and toukaa !!! But honestly it was pretty dumb for urie and the old man to go against furuta so directly, they should've thought of a better plan or tried to make contact with kaneki first, guess they were tight on time .
