I don't think the reason has been officially confirmed yet. I think it has something to do with his brother and the blood stone incident.

He lost the other wing when he fought with Ragus back in chapter 398. He Rai had a pair of wing before that.
Ohhh tht makes sense I totally forgot about tht I had thought it was bc of his brother wen he took the blood stone
