Okay, the ending works for me. It's saying that the sins of the adults didn't ruin life forever for the next generation. They all suffered--dad, mother, stepmother--and had shortened lives. The children suffered, but they broke that curse.
Now, they can be a family as siblings and continue to enjoy chocolate.
Even if it breaks--says the ending--there's still something left, and then it takes another shape. That pretty much encapsulates this story. A break that was painful. But something remained (even in the sick dad, even in the dying mom) and so a new shape came about.
I'm glad the kids can be happy. It's a shame the adults couldn't work out something (like not divorce, but incorporate the new baby into a bigger family, with forgiveness). Shows how selfishness can damage a lot of people. But how forgiveness and working at it can fix things.
I enjoyed it, and the happy ending helped to ease my upset at what the adults did.
