i mean at the start he shows up all hurt and is much older and he had just kinda gone missing one day and then the rest of it is them when they were younger

The story goes: present (he comes back) > past > where we are now (still in the past but closer to the present)
Zhan Xi (is it how you write his name?) says in the earliest chapters that Jian Yi had vanished
