"I'd like to buy him" oh so he was a 'modern' slave....? Why you have to buy him?

It's like buying off someone's debt sort of. Idk if it was the case here, but usually if you go into prostitution and sketchy lines of work like that you can't just leave whenever you want. So sometimes you have to, like, pay your way back out of it. I just assumed that was the case here
