The clan and offerings were always meant to live and work together to survive. The clan could share their life force with offerings and protect themselves from dying and the offering's life could be extended by the clan member's powers - the way Motoi did with Kuuchi - or they could devour the heart of the offering and add time to their lifespan. The first option makes offerings a sustainable resource, but it requires love which requires work. The second option is less work, but it means that offerings will not procreate and sustain the clan. Basically, the clan "over hunted" the source of their immortality because they were greedy and proud. This led to the clan's demise.
As for Motoki and Kuuchi, since they share a life force, Kuuchi can heal Motoki and Motoki can heal Kuuchi. This was how the clan and offerings were meant to live together.
I can imagine the back story going something like: All the clan members and offerings are male, but since love is required to share a life force, there was an offering born who objected to loving another man. The clansman, griped by the fear of death and the anger of rejection, kills the offering viciously. In a state of madness, he decides that if he can't possess the offerings heart, he will devour and consume it. Thus, the realization of immortality through these means is discovered. Since the clan are endowed with powers and revered, they fell into pride and hubris, thinking they did not need to love an offering when they could simply kill and eat them. The original design between clan and offering is forgotten and hunting the offerings down becomes the norm.
