I don't know that either... but I think that the beating was for make him realise that he didn't really want to die: physical pain to erase "heart pain" or something like that
I re-read from the very beginning and now a lot of things from "dear mr.hatter" are more clear! *.* It's amazing how the two stories are connected, I'm sure that when the timelines will match again something exciting will happens ヾ(☆▽☆)
