I read some previous comments and I don't think Jaechan is self-sacrificing himself. He is literally trying to rescue the hostages. I read the novel. He is trying to oneup the criminals all the time while he's being held hostage. I think there's a big difference between self-sacrificing and sneaky strategic surrender which buys him time to execute his plans. Jaechan is smart and a badass MC. He will resolve like 98% of this mass hostage taking and manages to achieve two of his goals in changing the past.
I also started the novel recently and couldn’t agree more!! He is smart and very strong, also he is really trying his best to be a better person this time. He’s using his second chance very well. I also like how his relationship with Woojin is evolving

God, you mentioning the novel makes me wanna read it again. I just finished it last month but it was so interesting and fun. The mix of action and romance is really well balanced. I don't wanna elaborate too much so I wont spoil it for you but I hope you enjoy the book!
